I
I am entering my 3rd year as a PhD student in Computer Science &
Engineering at UCSD. My research advisor is Dr. Javier Movellan.
I completed my undergraduate degree in computer science at
Stanford, and my master's degree in computer
science at the
University of the Western Cape (South Africa). Here is my CV.
Research Interests
Machine learning and its applications to computer vision; face analysis;
automated tutoring systems.
Publications
Tutorial: Understanding ACT-R: An Outsider's Perspective: Understanding Anderson's ACT-R model of cognition can be
difficult for an outsider, especially because the literature is distributed over a large collection of texts, and the definitions are often
vague. This is my summary of the most important topics of the theory.
Automatic Real-Time
Facial Expression Recognition for Signed Language Translation, MSc thesis, University of the Western Cape, Bellville, South Africa, May 2006.
This thesis contains a fairly comprehensive literature review of automatic facial expression recognition (FER) literature through 2005, which may be helpful for other researchers.
Paul Ruvolo & talked about "Distributed Labeling of Massive Datasets" to the UCSD CSE Artificial Intelligence Seminar on January 26, 2009. PDF.
I gave a "Whirlwind Tour of Computer Science" talk to high school students
at a local high school: PPT slides.
Personal
I wrestle with San Diego Wrestling, a freestyle wrestling club that welcomes individuals irrespective of
gender and sexual orientation. Ich spreche auch fliessend Deutsch.
