RUBIOS

RUBIOS 2.0 is a Java based open source communications API for for Social Robots. It is built on top of QuickServer, an open source Java library for multi-threaded, multi-client TCP server applications. RUBIOS 2.0 was developed as part of the RUBI project to be the backbone for interconnecting the different perceptual and control modules of the RUBI robot. RUBI is a social robot developed to interact with toddlers and assist teachers in early childhood education settings. RUBIOS has been battle tested in MacOSX 10.4.X and Windows XP with Cygwin.

Users:

  • Hanson Robotics: RUBIOS was used as the interprocess message passing backbone in the Hanson Robotics/UCSD demonstration of the Einstein android head at the TED conference, Feb, 2009.
  • RUBI Project: The goal of this project is to develop and evaluate social robots that interact with toddleres and assist teachers in early childhood education settings.
  • LFI/CERT Project: This is a collaboration between Jim Tanaka’s lab at the University of Victoria, the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and the MPLab. The goal of this project is to develop perceptive games, agents, and social robots to teach children with autism basic expressions of emotion.
  • RLAI/MPLab Project: This is a collaboration between Rich Sutton’s RLAI lab and the MPLab to explore the use of expression recognition as a reinforcement signal for social robots.
