Usually about 1 hour to code 1 minute of facial behavior is what I have heard. Do any of you have a reference for this figure or do you know if it has been referred to or published anywhere? We have found that the estimated time varies significantly depending on what the subject is doing. If they are engaged in an interview type situation where they are speaking the coding time can be on the high end of 3 hours per 1 minute of video or even more. If there is no speaking involved then coding takes much less time with usually 100 minutes per 1 minute video and for really still subjects it can be as little as 60 minutes per 1 minute of video. Of course there is also the consideration of what type of coding is being used, whether onset/apex/offset or some variation thereof is of interest and the number of Aus that are being coded for. I hope this helps. I will also email you an article I found a while back referencing coding time per minute of video. That is street knowledge, but it's a pretty accurate average estimate. I think interview/ speaking contexts can take longer. I am not sure where it appears in print. Possibly my introductory chapter to What the face reveals, but I'm on the road and don't have it handy. Ekman has cited this figure for years. You might also check the FACS manual investigators guide. I'll write again if I can find the exact ref but check those.
